パターン：I wonder if … ; I was wondering if/about … [上級]

動詞 wonder は「不思議に思う」という意味です。このパターンは if や about と一緒に使われる場合が多いだし、現在形と過去進行形で一番よく使われます。

まずは、現在形の I wonder if … の使い方を教えします。

I wonder if …

現在形の I wonder if  は「～かなと思う」という意味で使われます。動詞 wonder は「不思議に思う」という意味ですから、I wonder if … を直訳すると「〜どうか不思議に思う」となります。if の後ろには完全な文を付けて表現します。

• I wonder if anyone can solve this problem.
  誰かこの問題を解くことができないかな。
• I wonder if I should tell him.
  彼に話すのかな。

I was wondering …

過去進行形の I was wondering … は「～について考えていた」という意味ですが、「〜していただけませんか」を意味する場合もあります。was wondering は、次の三つのパターンで一番よく使われます。

• I was wondering about (名詞).
  ～について考えていた。
• I was wondering (関係副詞) …
  ～について考えていた。
• I was wondering if you could (動詞の原形).
  ～していただけませんか？

一つ目と二つ目のパターンは「～について考えていた」「～について気になっていた」などの意味です。いくつかの例文をお見せします。

• I was wondering what their opinion on that is.
  それに対する彼らの意見はどうなのだろうかと、考えていました
• I was wondering what to do next.
  次、どうしようかと思っていました
• I was wondering about the time difference!
  私は時差について気になっていた！

I was wondering if … は、「～してくれないかなぁと思った」「〜していただけませんか」などの意味で、丁寧に依頼したり許可を求めたりする表現として使われます。例えば、直訳すると "I was wondering if you could help me." は「あなたが手伝ってくれないかしらと思っていたのですが …」となりますが「手伝ってくれませんか？」という意味で使われます。if の後ろには (you) could (動詞の原形) とか (you) might (動詞の原形) などを付けて表現します。
