nothing とは、否定文で「何も(ない)」という意味です。nothing にはいろいろな使い方がありますが、今回は日常で一番よく使われるパータンをお伝えします。

• There is nothing (場所)
  ～には何もない
• There is nothing to (動詞の原形)
  何も～することがない
• There is nothing (形容詞)
  ～なものは他にはない
• There is nothing like (名詞)
  ～に勝るものはない
• There is nothing (that) (主語 ) can (動詞の原形)
  私が～できることがない

文によって、nothing は 名詞、形容詞と副詞の役割を果たすことができます。nothing は「何も(ない)」という意味でしょう？「誰でも(いない)」は no one と言いて、「どこにも(ない)」は nowhere と言います。人について話す時は nothing (anything, something) の代わりに no-one (anyone, someone)、場所について話す時は nowhere (anywhere, somewhere) を使います。では、まずは名詞として使われる場合をお見せしたいと思います。

There is nothing (何もない)

名詞として使うと、There is nothing は「何もない」という意味になります。here や there とか in/at/on + (場所)、(時間) などの言葉を付けて表現してもOKですけど、形容詞 とか to + (動詞) などの言葉を付けると意味が変わります。いくつかの例文をお見せします。

• There is nothing.
  何もない
• There is nothing here.
  ここには何もない
• There nothing there.
  そこには何もない
• There is nothing in my hometown.
  故郷には何もありません。
• There was no-one at school today.
  今日は学校には誰もいなかったです。
• There is nothing for me here.
  ここには私にとって何もありません。
• There is nothing on TV.
  テレビで何もやってない

for me は「私にとって」という意味です。このパターンは特に There is nothing + for me to (動詞の原形) の形で使われて、「私には何も～することがない」という意味になります。to (動詞の原形) と一緒に使われる場合をお見せします。

There is nothing to do (～することがない)

There is nothing to (動詞) の文型は「～することは何もない」という意味です。

• There is nothing to do.
  何もやることがない
• There was nothing for me to do today.
  今日することが何も無かった。
• There is nothing to eat at my house.
  家に食べ物がない
• There is nothing to write.
  書くものがありません。
• There is nothing to worry about.
  心配することは何もない
• There is nothing to laugh at.
  なにも笑うことはない

no-one と nowhere の使い方もお見せします。

• There is no one to help (me).
  手伝ってくれる人はいない
• There is no one to work.
  働く人はいません。
• There is nowhere to go.
  遊びにいく所がない
• There is nowhere to sit.
  座る所がない

There is nothing (形容詞) (～なものは他にはない)

あることを強調したい時には There is nothing (形容詞) というパターンを使うことができます。この形は次のようなパターンでよく使われます。

• There is nothing wrong with …
  ～には悪いところは何もない。
• There is nothing good about …
  ～にはいいことはありません
• There is nothing bad about …
  ～には悪いところは何もない
• There is nothing hard about …
  ～には難しいことはありません

例文をお見せします。

  これは別に間違ったことではない
• There is nothing wrong with this story.
  この話なら何も不都合なところはありません。
• There is nothing particularly good.
  別段うまいことも無い
• There is nothing hard about learning English.
  英語を学ぶのに難しいことは何もありません。

There is nothing … than … に付ける形容詞は better や more といった比較級の場合もよくあります。

• There is nothing better than this.
  これより良いものは他にはない。
• There is nothing more important than this.
  これより重要なものは他にはない
• There is nothing more important than being with the people I love.
  愛する人たちと一緒にいることほど重要なことはありません
• There is nothing better than the taste of home cooking.
  愛する人たちと一緒にいることほど重要なことはありません
• There is nothing worse than that.
  そんなことほど最悪なことはない。

There is nothing like … (～に勝るものはない)

There is nothing like … とは「～に勝るものはない」や「～に限る」を意味するパターンです。直訳すると「～のようなものはない」になりますが、だいたい「～より素晴らしいものはない」のニュアンスで使われます。like の後ろに 名詞 や 動名詞 が来ます。

• There is nothing like it.
  それに勝るものはないですね
• There is nothing like music.
  音楽は唯一無二だ
• There is nothing like sleep.
  睡眠ほどよいものはない
• There is nothing like winning.
  勝ちに勝るものはない
• There is nothing like seeing a movie on the big screen.
  大画面で映画を見るに限る
• There is nothing like a beer after work!
  きついトレーニングの後のビールは最高ね！

There is nothing that I can … (～できることがない)

There is nothing that … can … のパターンは「～できることがない」などの意味です。can の代わりに will とか want のような助動詞を使いてもOKです。

• There is nothing that I can …
  私には～できることがない
• There is nothing that I want to …
  私には～したいことがない
• There is nothing that I will …
  何も～するつもりがない

直訳すると、There is nothing that I can do は「それについて私にできることは何もない」となりますが、「しょうがないね」などの意味でよく使われます。

• There is nothing that I can do.
  私にはできることがない
• There is nothing that I want to do.
  私はやりたいことがない
• There is nothing that I will do.
  私は何もするつもりがない
• There is nothing that we can’t accomplish.
  僕たちが実現できないことはない。
• There is nothing that I can’t afford!
  買う余裕がないなんてないよ。

問題について話したい時は上記のパターンに about (名詞・動名詞) を付けることができます。

  それに関して私が出来ることは何もない
