way は「道」という意味ですが、「仕方」「方法」という意味でよく使われます。ですから、There is no way to + (動詞の原形) とか There is no way that + (完全な文) というパターンは「仕方がない」「～できる方法がない」という意味で使われます。There is no way that … は「～できるわけがない」という意味でもよく使われますが、状況によって「～は絶対にない」「～しそうにない」「～なんて絶対にあり得ない」という意味になる場合もあります。

少し難しいでしょう？no way は一般的に「仕方がない」「～できる方法がない」「～することが無理だ」「～することが不可能だ」という意味で使われます。直訳すると「道がない」となりますね。それでも、日常会話では何か信じられないことについて話す時に使われることも多いだし、「絶対にしない」などの意味で使われることも多いです。まずは「方法」を意味する way の使い方をお見せしたいと思います。

仕方がない時：There is no way …

There is no way … は「方法がない」と「～することは無理だ」の意味を持っていますね。使い方は二つがあり、There is no way to + (動詞の原形)、There is no way that + (完全な文) というパターンです。that 節がなしで表現しても OK です。

• There is no way.
  仕方がない
• There is no way to do that.
  そうする方法がない
• There is no way to cross here.
  ここでは渡ることは無理ですね
• There is no way to retrieve it.
